Hulu’s Interior Chinatown tells the story of Willis Wu, a Chinese Restaurant waiter who longs to be the main character in his own life. The story takes place in a surreal post-modern world that feels like a self-aware TV show where everyone fits into some type of TV trope. To bring the audience into this unique world, these title designs take a cinematic approach, creating a neon sign logo with reflections in the glass and atmospheric details within the scene. For many of these, there is a
combination of neon letters in the interior, and painted lettering on the exterior of the
window. Each title varies with elements like rain, condensation, and smudges on the glass
affecting the image, as well as light interactions and reflections depending on the time of
day and street scenes.
I also designed two frames inspired by the rice bag in Chinatown.
